Deep Thoughts (while procrastinating on packing)

I'm in the final throes of office moving this week, and while pulling things down off bulletin boards, I stumbled across a quote that I pinned up awhile back. I quite liked it when I first found it, and I still like it now, having rediscovered it all over again. From Ralph Waldo Emerson, "We become what we think about all day long."

While I dearly hope this does not mean I'm becoming one big pile of paperwork that desperately needs filing (!) I do think there's some truth to it--and to that end, I hope I'm someone whose own story is as rich and compelling as those I seek and surround myself with each day. What about you--what do you think about all day long? What are you becoming?

  1. I think about hitting the "de-wrinkle" button on the dryer one more time. So basically, I'm trying to iron out my life.

  2. A manuscript smothered in awesomesauce. Or a tax return. (I'm a CPA when I'm not writing. Although, I confess, I think about the ms. while figuring out passive losses. Don't tell my clients....)

  3. Writing. My characters. Holding a hard cover copy of my book in my hands. You know, the usual small stuff.

My head is in contast planning mode for what I'm working on plus new ideas for future projects. It can be a bit distracting, but at least I know I'll never have a shortage of ideas when I finally become published.

  5. Lately I've been thinking about finding places for my books. My boys are moving their bedrooms up into the attic and its a bit like nesting. The first thing we did was move all their books upstairs and it was a beautiful thing to watch them rediscover their favorite stories. Their furniture isn't in yet, yet we climb the stairs every night, sprawl across the carpet like a pile of puppies to read. When we're done we reverently slide the books back on the shelf of their new home.

Before I turn off the lights and head down the stairs, I also think about my first YA novel. It is out in the world looking for a place. There are days when it feels as if I'd jump to be on any book shelf, but as my fingers trail across the spines of the books that were mine and now are my children's, I know I want my book to find its own magical place and I'm happy to know that I'll become what I think about all day...

  6. Great quote. I think about cookbooks and old recipes often, which is of course why I'm now on Weight Watchers - so this quote is true!

Good luck with your move. As someone who moved two months ago I can tell you that after moving week it does get a lot better fast! Keep track of where your shoes are, though - I went without my favorite shoes for a couple weeks.
